Espen Robak, CFA, President of Pluris Valuation Advisors in New York, N.Y., will be the lead panelist for a discussion of Auction-Rate Securities valuations in light of
FAS 157.
Recent auction failures have cast doubt on the valuations applied to these securities in the past. At the same time, a
secondary market for ARSs has begun operating for buyers and sellers of ARSs.
FAS 157 specifies that market data needs to be applied to valuation problems, whenever available. The webinar will cover two valuation approaches:
- A “comparables” approach, where positions in ARSs are valued based on prices for comparable positions traded in the secondary market.
- A discounted cash flow approach, where positions are valued based on projected future cash flows, discounted to the present based on an appropriate yield for illiquid securities of similar credit quality.
